The Art of Tsukamaki: Master Craftsman Mitsuya Shuji Reveals All His Techniques

Tsukamaki, the art of wrapping the handle of a Japanese sword, encompasses various styles. Among them, "Ippon-dome" is the method formally adopted by the Tokugawa family during the Edo period, with its unique binding technique meticulously passed down. Mitsuya Shuji has extensively researched and demonstrated this technique, along with the "Nihon-dome" which developed independently by various clans outside the Tokugawa domain. Additionally, he showcases the "Jabara-ito-dome," a post-Edo method known for its more decorative wrapping style. Mitsuya himself demonstrates and explains each binding method in detail.

Furthermore, this DVD includes demonstrations and explanations on various handle shapes, the construction of the handle core, attaching sharkskin, the intricacies of wrapping techniques, the specifics of the tsuka-ito (handle wrap), determining its length, the preparation steps, and the positioning and insertion method of the menuki (ornaments).

Note: This work is a public release version of the DVD "All About Japanese Sword Tsukamaki," originally available for sale by TV Setouchi Create. The footage included is identical to that of "All About Japanese Sword Tsukamaki."
