Gozo Shioda (Gozo Shioda) Born September 9, 1915, in Yotsuya, Tokyo. Since childhood, he studied Judo and Kendo, and in 1932, he entered the gate of Aikido founder, the late Morihei Ueshiba. He spent about 8 years as an uchideshi (live-in disciple) training closely under the founder. In 1941, he graduated from Takushoku University and was dispatched to China, Taiwan, and Borneo to promote Aikido. Upon returning to Japan in 1946, he resumed training under Morihei Ueshiba. In 1955, he won the Grand Prize at the Japan Comprehensive Martial Arts Tournament. In 1956, he founded the Yoshinkan Aikido Dojo. In 1961, he received permission from Morihei Ueshiba to hold the 9th dan, the highest rank at the time. He devoted himself to the revival of Aikido from the difficult post-war era and in 1957, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Riot Police Aikido specialized system was launched. He also taught Aikido as a mandatory course for female police officers in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. The Yoshinkan Aikido Dojo has echoed its name in the martial arts world as the headquarters of practical Aikido. He passed away on July 17, 1994.
