In the 1964 All Japan Championships, he defeated Katsutoshi Okano, who later won a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics middleweight category, advancing to the quarterfinals. Despite facing much larger opponents, Okuda's ground techniques earned him the nickname \"Okuda of Chokes.\" After graduating from Tenri University in 1963, he taught at Fukuoka's prestigious Shuuyo-kan High School until retiring in March 2000.
